Subject: Fake Roots Get Deleted
Date: September 18, 1990
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
GENERAL
INFORMATION: With current revisions of the 3.01 NET3 shell (including
Rev. D), if a fake root is created and then a DIR SYS: (or
whatever the volume name is) is executed, a directory
listing at the volume level is shown and the fake root
structure of the network drive is lost.
For example:
MAP ROOT G:=SYS:THIS/THAT
The root directory is at subdirectory THAT
DIR SYS:
The contents of SYS: is listed
MAP G:
SYS: is returned. The fake root to THIS/THAT is gone.
Fake roots are described as a security feature in Novell
documentation. NetWare 386 v3.1 documentation says that
users should not be assigned rights at the root directory
for security reasons. If you do not want users to have
rights, they should not be able to do a DIR.
This problem has been reported to Engineering.
